Fontnotes

Despite the modern name, Dingbats have been around since the days of Gutenberg.  Technically known as a "printer's ornament", these were used for asthetic purposes, to beautify a page.  They also had a practical reason as well: to break up the visual blocks and to add in the creation of "white space" to reduce the strain on a reader's eyes.
